The Original Xandarian Uniform

Uniform specifications:

Nova's original uniform was made of unidentified materials that were highly resistant to damage, heat and cold including the extremes of outer space. The helmet contained advanced circuitry which enabled Nova to monitor radio transmissions. In particular, Rich Rider could monitor the frequency used by police dispatchers (of which his mother, Gloria Rider, was one).

The helmet also included a malleable Xandarian alloy which could lower to cover the face by cybernetic command or via sensors in the uniform which could sense changes in pressure and atmosphere and activate automatically. Once activated, Nova's uniform became airtight and the helmet was connected to an oxygen supply concealed within the uniform which could last up to 15 minutes. The helmet also provided access to the Nova Prime spaceship and could see through its cloaking shield. When removed, the helmet would collapse into a cloth-like material.

This uniform was transferred to Rich Rider, along with his Nova powers, by Rhomann Dey. Dey was the Xandarian who held the position of Centurion Nova Prime until his death by Zorr, the Luphomoid who destroyed his home planet. This uniform was worn by Rich Rider from the beginning of his career until the end of the Xandar/Skrull War. After the war, Rich gave up his Nova powers and uniform in order to return home to his family on Earth.

Description

The original Rhomann Dey uniform consisted of a dark blue/black skintight outfit which covered the torso and legs. The uniform's sleeves were yellow and stretched fom the shoulder to the fingertips. The wrist areas had dark blue/black armbands which went over the yellow sleeves.

On the torso area were three starbursts which signified the rank of Centurion in Xandar's Nova Corps. The shoulder areas arched upwards and it's believed that the suit's air supply was contained in this area. The back of the uniform had a single large yellow starburst.

The leg area of the uniform had a yellow stripe which began as a belt around the waist and ran down each side. The stripes ended around mid-calf where it became a legband which encircled the leg.

The 'Kid Nova' Costume

Costume specifications:

The 'Kid Nova' costume first appeared a year after the events of Rom #24 and the end of the Xandar/Skrull War.

After Rich's Nova powers reactivated (due to the actions of both Xandar's Queen Adora and the hero named Night Thrasher), Nova wore this red-jacketed, sleeveless costume. The name of 'Kid Nova' refers to a nickname that Nova was called during this period in his career.

This particular suit was made of regular cloth and had no powers. It was supplied by Night Thrasher. It was part of his offer to Nova; that in exchange for helping him get his powers back, Nova would help him form the super-hero team later called the New Warriors.

The suit was worn briefly and destroyed by an energy blast during a battle with a street gang using high-tech weapons.

Description

The 'Kid Nova' uniform never had a consistent color scheme during its short tenure. The helmet closely resembled the 'Original Xandarian Uniform' but did not have its opaque lens, advanced circuitry or the ability to collapse into cloth.

The costume consisted of a dark-red outfit which covered the torso and legs. The torso portion was buttoned in the front with yellow buttons along the right side. The look was similar to a 1940's test-pilot jacket but had no sleeves. Similar to the original Rhomann Dey uniform, the shoulder areas arched upwards. The wrist areas had armbands.

The leg area of the uniform had a yellow stripe which began as a belt around the waist and ran down each side. The stripes ended around mid-calf where it became a legband which encircled the leg.

The areas of inconsistency were the armbands and boots. Sometimes, they were colored red and other times they were gold.

The 'Muscle Shirt' Costume

Costume specifications:

After the jacket of the 'Kid Nova' costume was destroyed, Rich Rider used the muscle shirt that he worked out in at Gold's Gym as a replacement. It was only used for one issue before the entire costume was replaced with the 'Brown' costume.

Description

The helmet closely resembled the 'Original Xandarian Uniform' but did not have its opaque lens, advanced circuitry or the ability to collapse into cloth.

The muscle shirt was a sleeveless, loose-fitting red shirt with no markings on either the front or back. Nova retained the gold armbands from the 'Kid Nova' costume.

The leg area of the uniform had a yellow stripe which began as a belt around the waist and ran down each side. The stripes ended around mid-calf where it became a legband which encircled the leg.

Designed By: Mark Bagley

The New Warriors Brown Costume

Costume specifications:

The 'Muscle Shirt' costume was quickly replaced with the 'Brown' one. It is unknown if the costume was supplied by Night Thrasher or put together by Rich Rider himself.

Description

Like the 'Kid Nova' and 'Muscle Shirt' costumes before it, the helmet closely resembled the 'Original Xandarian Uniform' but did not have its opaque lens, advanced circuitry or the ability to collapse into cloth.

The costume itself consisted of a brown skin-tight outfit which covered the shoulders, most of the chest along with the entire ab region and legs. The torso portion curved inward under the shoulders, through the chest and spread back out around the rib cage. The wrist areas had gold armbands.

The leg area of the uniform had a gold stripe which began as a belt around the waist and ran down each side. The stripes ended around mid-calf where it became a legband which encircled the leg.

Night Thrasher's Variant of the Original

Costume specifications:

Modified version of the original Xandarian uniform and was created by Night Thrasher with the resources of the Taylor Foundation.

Description

The costume was made of unidentified Earth materials which could withstand extreme conditions (including outer space) and damage. Like its Xandarian predecessor, it had a self-contained oxygen system which activated when a plexi-glass plate lowered from the costume's helmet and sealed it closed. The plate was activated by the mental commands of Nova.

The helmet contained infra-red vision, telescopic vision and night vision. It also had a built-in radio which scanned for police alerts. This costume differed slightly from the original Xandarian Uniform. Differences: wrist bands extended over the palm of the hand. Belt was larger than original. Unlike the original, the shoulders are not sloped upwards. The yellow starburst on the back resembled the helmet's red one instead of the original's full eight-sided burst.

Designed By: Mark Bagley (based on the original design by Len Wein and John Romita Sr.)

Upgraded Xandarian Uniform

Uniform specifications:

After reviving Xandar and the Living Computers/WorldMind, Nova was given an upgraded uniform by the Xandarians.

Description

Given to Nova by the Xandarians, this uniform contained all the abilities of the 'Original Xandarian Uniform' but with significant improvements.

Cosmetic differences between this uniform and the original include red bands above the blue armbands and below the gold legbands. It also had red power pods on the arms. Unlike the original, the shoulder area does not slope upward. The helmet on this uniform closely resembled the original but the nose area was exposed. Like the original, it also had a built-in radio which scanned for police alerts.

The functional upgrades included an expanded oxygen supply that allows for 6 hours of air compared to the original 15 minutes. The lenses could provide infra-red vision, telescopic vision and night vision to the wearer. Also, the helmet could now hold audio files for playback as well as holographic message capabilities which can allow him to see communications from Xandar which are transmitted through the Nova Prime Starship. While never verified, it is possible the helmet also has a form of GPS (Global Positioning system) through the Nova Prime Starship which allows Nova to fly directly to areas of the world he's never been before.

NOTES: In one issue (Nova #16 v2), Nova altered the costume to resemble his original uniform. The only variation from the original was in the color of the wristbands. They had changed from blue to red. After New Warriors #75, Nova returned to the look of the 'Original Xandarian Uniform' but without the opaque lens. This was worn throughout Nova's third series and most appearances afterwards.

New Warriors II (Rich Rider's Design)

Costume specifications:

The costume is a modified version of the Upgraded Xandarian Uniform given to Rich Rider by the Xandarians. It was designed by Rich Rider when the New Warriors reformed. After a stern warning from Queen Adora, Nova remorphed his costume back to the standard look of the 'Original Xandarian Uniform'.

Description

The costume contains the same properties and abilities of the Upgraded Xandarian Uniform. The changes were in appearance only.

The helmet was dark blue/black with a yellow starburst that loosely resembled the original helmet's red star.

The costume consisted of a dark blue/black skintight outfit which covered the torso and legs. The uniform's sleeves were yellow and stretched fom the shoulder to the fingertips. The wrist areas had dark blue/black armbands which went over the yellow sleeves. The end of the bands extended backwards and formed into spikes.

On the torso area was a single yellow starburst that loosely resembled the original helmet's red star.

The leg area of the uniform had two yellow stripes which began around the waist and ran down each side. The stripes ended around mid-calf where it formed yellow boots.

New Warriors 'TV Show' Costume

Costume specifications:

This costume was created shortly before Nova was on the New Warriors reality TV show. It is not known if this is a modification of the Xandarian uniform or a new version created on Earth by Rich Rider for unknown reasons.

Description

The helmet resembled the 'Original Xandarian Uniform' helmet with the major difference being in the red starburst. The starburst appeared to be imbedded in the helmet itself compared to the separate, but connected, look of the original.

The costume consisted of a black garment covering the neck area, a sleeveless blue outfit which covered the torso and legs. The standard three yellow starbursts signifying the rank of Centurion Nova Prime were on the torso area.

Blue gloves covered the upper forearms and hands. The torso portion also had a small upturned collar. A yellow belt went around the waist but did not form a complete circle in the front.

Properties of the costume are unknown. However, the helmet apparently cannot morph like the Upgraded Xandarian Uniform.

Annihilation Uniform

Uniform specifications:

After the destruction of Xandar and the Nova Corps during the Annihilation Invasion, the WorldMind transferred all of the Nova Force and itself into Rich Rider. In order to contain the incredible energies, the WorldMind created this uniform.

Description

This uniform contains many differences from the Upgraded Xandarian Uniform. The helmet has the least amount of outward change with only the red starburst now consisting of eight points instead of six. It still has the frequency scanner and holographic display capabilities. The helmet also contains an interface that allows a wearer to communicate with the WorldMind's artificial intelligence. It also has the ability to collapse into cloth in the same manner as the Xandarian Original uniform's helmet.

The self-contained life support functions of the Upgraded Xandarian Uniform are no longer necessary due to the new invulnerabilities provided by the higher level of Nova Force.

The uniform consist of a blue garment covering the neck area, torso, arms and legs. The standard three yellow starbursts signifying the rank of Centurion Nova Prime remain on the torso area but now appear to be energy regulators along with the two regulators on the gloves.

The forearms, shins and shoulders are protected by spiked guards. The shoulder guards begin at the top two energy regulators on the chest and continue to the back where they connect to some form of backpack. Whether this backpack is actually a shield, a storage device or a container for the WorldMind is unknown. However, this backpack was only seen during the Annihilation War. Currently, the back of the uniform has a six-sided starburst similar to the helmet starburst on the uniforms/costumes prior to the Annihilation uniform.

The guards on the arms begin at the energy regulators on the hands and extend upwards to the elbows. The leg guards begin at the top of the foot areas and extend up to the knees.

The belt goes completely around the waist and connects in the front by a buckle with three circles on it. The legs continue to feature yellow stripes which run from the belt and down under the boots. The blue boots cover the legs up to under the knees. They also have four pleats which start at the yellow guards and wrap around the back of the boots.

The suit also contains a built-in tech support system. The Centurion Suit User Support System is a limited artificial intelligence system capable of routing and regulating the Nova Force along with repairing the uniform if it is damaged. The CSUSS lacks the decision-making functions of the WorldMind and can only respond to directives issued by Richard Rider.

All of the properties of the uniform are unknown. However, in order to contain the full Nova Force, the thicker material apparently cannot morph like the Upgraded Xandarian Uniform and must be put on like regular clothing.

Quasar Costume

Costume specifications:

This costume was created during a period in which the WorldMind had removed the Nova Force from Richard Rider. In order to save Rider's decaying cellular structure, the quantum form of Wendell Vaughn gave him the Quantum Bands. The costume came with the powers given by the bands.

Description

The costume consisted of a blue garment which began at the upper neck and spread into a T-shape on the torso. The suit's blue shoulder region extended from the shoulders and became a cape. The inner lining of the cape contained a starfield. The blue part of the costume continued through the abdmomen area and extended out at the waist and cover the legs down to the lower part of the knees.

The upper arms, both sides of the torso and the lower legs were covered by red material. The gloves were blue with a single golden circle at the top of each one. The wrist area of the gloves were encircled by a number of glowing golden circles representing the Quantum Bands.

The torso contained a golden circle with two lines crossing each other. When the Quantum Bands were in use, an energy form of the symbol would appear in front of the costume's torso. A golden belt went around the waist but did not form a complete circle in the front. On the legs, a golden band went around the calf regions between the blue and red areas of the costume.

The costume did not appear to have any unique powers and was simply an extension of the Quantum Bands.

Black Nova Uniform

Uniform specifications:

This uniform was created by a corrupted member of the Nova Corps named Adomox and a handful of Corpsmen who believed the Corps weren't powerful enough with their level of Nova Force.

The Black Novas created the Black Nova helmets to allow them to access a higher Nova Force level without restrictions.

To avoid detection by the WorldMind, the helmet appears to take the allotted amount of Nova Force given to the Nova and amplifies it through an on-board reactor.

However, one of the drawbacks appears to be that, once the Black Nova helmet is worn, the wearer's ability to use the Nova Force from within their body is no longer possible. A Black Nova's use of the Nova Force comes strictly from the helmet which is coded to only the user's DNA. If the wearer removes the helmet, the Black Nova armor closes itself into the helmet.

Description

The uniform consists of a black metallic helmet with a large red starburst which extends up and around the helmet's sides. It contains white opaque lens beneath the red starburst.

The uniform consists of a very dark blue armored garment which began at the upper neck and covers the torso and legs. The uniform's shoulder areas are gold and extends over the upper arm regions. The dark blue armor extends from above the elbows down to the middle of the forearms. The gold armor covers the rest of the arms down to the mid-fingertips. The blue armor resumes to the end of the hands.

The torso contained three golden circles with two lines connecting them together. Another set of lines connect the three circles to the back and to a gold belt. The back of the uniform contains an identical set of three golden circles.

Gold armor covers the wearer's feet from the mid-calf area to the end of the toes. The toes are covered by blue armor.

Post-Cancerverse Uniform

Uniform specifications:

This uniform was created by Richard Rider upon his return from his imprisonment in the Cancerverse. It is a modified version of the uniform he wore during and following the Annihilation War. He reshaped it through his control of the Nova Force.

Description

This uniform contains all of the features contained in the Annihilation uniform. The differences appear to be cosmetic only. The helmet retains its ability to collapse into cloth in the same manner as the Xandarian Original uniform's helmet.

Rich Rider altered the helmet's eight-sided starburst back to the original six-sided version he wore when he first became Nova. The helmet now has a more pointed shape along the crest area. The lower section of the helmet has become more curved than the Annihilation version.

The uniform continues to consist of a blue garment covering the neck area, torso, arms and legs. It retains the standard three yellow energy regulators on the torso along with the two regulators on the gloves.

The torso guards have been expanded with gold sections along the collar bone region and a small gold extension between the two upper energy regulators and the third lower one. The spiked shoulder guards of the original Annilhilation uniform have been expanded into full shoulder pad-shaped armor. The guards cover the entire shoulder area and extend to the back of the uniform. Beneath each shoulder armor are two extensions to provide protection of the upper arms.

The blue gloves underneath the spiked guards on the forearms have been changed to gold armbands. They begin just above the energy regulators on the hands and extend upwards to the elbows on the front and the middle of the forearms on the back. The torso section is now connected to the back area by two gold straps on each side of the body.

In the back, they connect to a shield which features a red six-sided Nova starburst. The upper edges of the spine-covering shield is overlapped by shoulder armor.

The gold belt forms the shape of an unconnecting lightning bolt around the waist.

The Annihilation boots have been altered to be gold boots extending from the top of the knees in the front to the middle of the calf region on the backs of the legs. They continue downward to cover the entire foot.

Training Uniform

Uniform specifications:

The "Training Uniform" was worn by Sam Alexander during his unofficial mentoring period with Richard Rider. The uniform is similar to the original Black Nova one provided by the helmet. The reason for the helmet modifying the uniform is unknown.

Description

The main change in the uniform's helmet is the addition of a chin guard across the lower portion of the helmet. The internal functions of the Black Nova helmet are unchanged.

The uniform retains the very dark blue armored garment which began at the upper neck and covers the torso and legs. However, an incomplete red circle now exists around the neck region. The uniform's shoulder areas continue the torso's dark blue garment and extends over the upper arm regions. Gold armor covers the rest of the arms with the exception of dark blue garment at the elbows.

The gold armor protecting the rest of lower arms extends down to cover the top of the hands. A red energy regulator has been added to the gold armor on each of the hand areas. The blue armor resumes to the middle of the fingers with gold armor covering the fingertips.

The torso retains the three golden circles of the original. However, the gold lines connecting them have been altered to extend from the top two circles only. The restructured lines connect the two circles to a gold belt and below to the top of the legs. They extend to the back of the uniform and slightly above the back of the gold belt. The lines also reach from the top of the circles and connect over the shoulders to a single gold circle which has replaced the back's original three golden circles.

Gold armor covers the wearer's feet from the mid-calf area and down over the entire foot area. The gold on the back of the calf region is slightly higher than the front.
