Lina agrees to go on a date with Sam Alexander. She also notices that Sam is holding a copy of War and Peace. Knowing that she likes books, the teenager tells Lina that he reads it for fun.

Meanwhile, Richard Rider flies over New York City trying to figure out what has happened to him after returning from the Cancerverse. He lands inside the World's Fair Unisphere and enters the passcode to his hidden quarters.

Suddenly, he finds himself under attack from a mysterious assailant. Rich flips his female attacker over and is happy to discover that she is Gamora!

Back at the Alexander home, Sam is taking a shower and worrying about his upcoming date. He starts thinking that he will mess up and whether being Nova will put her in danger. Sam finally decides to stop worrying and simply try to be a normal person for a day.

His sister Kaelynn runs into the bathroom pretending to be a superhero and shoots her brother with a toy dart gun. She asks Sam if she can play with his Nova helmet. He reminds her that the last time she wore it, she put a hole in the house. Sam gently tells her to go play somewhere else so he can get ready.

The teen hero asks his mother if he can use the car for his date. Eva reminds him that he doesn't have a driver's license. Her son argues that he flies into space practically every day so driving a car shouldn't be a problem. Eva still insists on driving him to his date. She also tells Kaelynn that her grandmother Abuelita will be watching her while they are gone. Kaelynn runs out to the garage and approaches the Alexanders's shrine of Nova helmets.

She doesn't notice the small piece of the Cancerverse creature hidden inside of a helmet.

Meanwhile at the Unisphere, Gamora wants to know how Rich has come back from the dead and why he didn't tell her earlier. Rich Rider begins to tell her about how something is wrong inside of him. He stops and asks her if she wants to go out for a fun night in the city.

Back in Carefree, Sam Alexander arrives at Lina's house. Suddenly, his imagination runs wild and pictures Lina in the form of a demon opening the door! The demon Lina tells Sam she's changed her mind about the date because he sucks. She pokes him with her finger and he falls onto a burning heap of Earth's superheroes. A dying Captain America agrees and confirms that Sam sucks.

The nightmarish daydream ends as the real Lina opens the door. Later on the way to the mall, Eva tells Lina an embarrassing story about her son when he was a toddler. It turns out that when Sam was trying on a pair of light up shoes as a child, the lights scared him so badly that he needed a new pair of pants.

Recalling the conditions from when she first met her date, Lina tells Sam that it sounds like he has always had problems with his pants. The teenager asks his mom to just drop them off.

In New York City, Gamora informs Rich that Thanos is being held on Earth and she intends to kill him. Rich tells her that is a bad idea but he'll always have her back. He apologizes for not contacting her earlier. Again, he almost tells her about the creature inside him but just can't go through with it. Suddenly, the two warriors are approached by a gang of muggers. They simply smile as Rich points out they are good at other things than talking.

Back at the Carefree mall, Sam tries to get a table at a restaurant. He is disappointed when he learns there is a two hour wait for a table. He offers to take Lina to a movie instead. His teenage date asks him to stop being nervous around her and just be himself. Sam relaxes and asks her what she'd like to do. Lina simply wants to take a walk with him and talk.

Outside the mall, Lina learns that Sam has lived in Carefree all his life but he likes New York City better. He quickly explains that he had an internship there. Lina admits she doesn't know if she likes small towns. She feels disconnected from the rest of the world and that the planet seems to be in a depressing state at the moment. She wants to help but the problems are too big for someone like her.

Sam Alexander points out that everyone keeps looking at the big problems and getting overwhelmed. He explains that big problems are simply a lot of small problems which can be fixed. Suddenly, they come across a homeless man being attacked by two muggers.

The teen hero attempts to stop the attackers. However, without his Nova helmet, Sam is quickly beaten down. After the muggers leave, Sam makes sure the homeless man isn't hurt. He suggests to the man that he go to the homeless shelter for help and that his mother works there on weekends. Lina admits she is impressed by Sam's courage. Sam reminds her of what he had told her about small problems.

In New York, Gamora and Rich (being highly trained fighters) quickly fill the street with a pile of broken muggers.

With their respective dates no longer interrupted, Rich and Sam both have great dates. Sam and Lina dance together on a game in the mall, have frosty ice drinks, and later kiss on a rock outside. Meanwhile, Rich and Gamora go for a walk, have a drink in a bar, and kiss on a building rooftop.

Suddenly, Rich is overwhelmed with pain and tells Gamora something is wrong. He senses something has happened regarding Sam and immediately flies off towards Carefree!

Back in Arizona, Eva is driving home with Sam and tells him he did a good job on his date. She smiles and tells her son that he reminds her of his father. But she also informs him that he needs to get his driver's license because she doesn't want to be his date taxi. As they pull in the driveway, they notice something terrible has happened.

They find Abuelita kneeling in the wrecked garage muttering about a demon. In horror, Eva screams out for Kaelynn!
