Homing in on the Nova signal received by his helmet, Sam Alexander races across the country and arrives in New York City. Sam believes it may be a signal coming from his father Jesse Alexander. However, he also remembers the last time he had that thought, the Nova turned out to be a clone of his father.

As he gets closer, the helmet's visor zooms in to show a Nova falling through the sky with an apparent black mass coming from his flight trail. Sam Alexander Nova accelerates and catches the unconscious man before he impacts the water. After placing him on a nearby rock, Sam takes a look at the man he just saved. He is shocked to realize he is looking at Richard Rider!

Suddenly, a part of the rock erupts as a dark tentacle hits it! The teen hero turns to find himself facing a floating dark creature from the Cancerverse! Realizing the creature is attempting to reach Rich, Sam Alexander Nova begins battling the monster he has nicknamed Puberty. After blasting and punching it, Sam finds himself wrapped in a tentacle. However, Richard Rider Nova has awakened and sees the battle going on above him.

A blast of energy slices through the creature as Rich frees Sam. The two Novas blast the Cancerverse monster back in to a dimensional tear that mysteriously only Rich can see. After introducing themselves, Sam Alexander Nova asks his new friend where the monster had come from. Rich Rider is quiet and then laughs it off.

Sam begins asking Rich about his true identity. He interrogates the older Nova and questions if he is a robot, clone or a Skrull. Rich tells him he is the real Rich Rider and asks Sam why if he is okay. The teen Nova admits that his father had been replaced by a clone who had tried to kill him. Rich reassures the young hero that he understands. Sam wants to find proof that Rich is who he claims to be.

Later, the two Novas are in the floating food truck which is the headquarters of the Champions. Amadeus Cho (Hulk) confirms through genetic bioscans that their guest is the real Richard Rider. The other Champions come forward to meet Rich Rider Nova. The older Nova quickly learns who the other members are and a little bit about other heroes he was previously familiar with.

The team admits they aren't familiar with the Annihilation War. Rich wonders why the Avengers never told them about it. Sam reveals that the Champions don't talk to the Avengers right due to a difference of opinion and that the superheroes in general don't get along nowadays.

As Rich Rider begins talking about being a member of the New Warriors, he suddenly sees the Champions as a group of zombified creatures in the same way he saw his mother when he returned to Earth. He excuses himself and flies to the top of the Empire State Building. Sam flies down and asks his new friend what's wrong with him.

Rich opens up and admits he is frustrated that the heroes on Earth are too busy fighting each other to remember the events of the Annihilation War and the battle with Thanos afterwards. The cosmic hero is also upset that he lost his father while he was gone. Sam shares that he misses his own father. Rich Rider Nova explains that he feels lost and doesn't know what he is supposed to do. Sam Alexander Nova offers Rich a suggestion.

Later in Carefree, Arizona, Sam and Rich arrive at the Alexander house. Eva Alexander is having a family party and is surprised to meet Rich. They introduce themselves and Eva tells her son and his friend to head outside to talk to the family.

In the yard, Sam is greeted by his uncles, Silvio and Sergio. After talking to them a couple of minutes, Sam excuses himself and takes Rich to the garage. Inside the garage, Rich is shocked to see the shrine of Nova helmets that Sam had collected from space. Sam encourages Rich to continue being Nova even though he seems to be going through a hard time.

Outside, the two Novas decide to race to a place they both know in order to clear their heads. As they fly off, a small piece of the Cancerverse creature appears from the end of Rich's energy trail. It crawls into the garage and gazes at one of the empty Nova helmets.

Elsewhere, Rich tells Sam about the Annihilation War and how he killed Annihilus. As he finishes his story, the two Novas arrive at Knowhere. The first occupant they decide to visit is Cosmo!

The telepathic Russian dog is extremely happy to see Rich Rider and even more so when Rich gives him a bag of leftover food. Cosmo politely tells Sam that he likes him, too.

Sam notices Cosmo is reading Tolstoy's War and Peace. The teen hero admits he's been thinking about reading more books. The space dog asks his friend who about someone named Lina. Sam Alexander Nova is caught off-guard and simply says she's a girl from school. Cosmo says that Sam's brain is very loud and it says that he loves Lina. Rich asks if she is Sam's girlfriend. The teenager from Carefree admits she isn't but he'd like her to be. The three friends decide to go to the Knowhere bar for a drink.

In the bar, Sam is a little uneasy at all the stares they got when they came in. He asks Rich if he ever got used to it. Rich Rider admits he never did. They go up to Syk the bartender who is happy to see Rich is back from the dead. Sam asks what the drinking age is in a space bar. Rich advises him to just keep his helmet on and act older. As Rich goes to pay for the drinks, Syk tells him that he doesn't owe him anything.

Rich turns to see the entire bar lifting their drinks in salute to Rich.

Sam points out to the more experienced Nova that they remember who he is. Suddenly, a voice rings out that he remembers both Novas and blasts them unconscious!

The heroes have been attacked by Titus, Death's Head, and a Chitauri warrior!
