In the movie theater, Sam Alexander and his friends are watching the movie and making comments about Graxxis and Sam comments how the movie ship's shielding couldn't survive a real atmospheric reentry. However, they get a little loud and are asked to be quiet by the other watchers.
After the movie, the three friends are walking outside when Sam's phone alerts him to a fire in the nearby town of Glendale. He quickly tells his two friends that he forgot that he promised to help his dad with a project at home. After his friends turn to continue on their way, Sam flies off towards the emergency.
A short time later in Glendale, Sam is shocked to find his father, Jesse Alexander, is already at the scene of the fire! Jesse is also surprised to see his son since he was supposed to have the night off from being Nova.
The two heroes rushed into the burning houses searching for anyone who may be trapped inside. Suddenly, Jesse's helmet malfunctions and he falls to the floor powerless! Fortunately, Sam immediately flies in and grabs his father and takes him to safety. The older Nova tells his son that there is still someone in the house. Nova rushes back in and quickly rescues a small kitten from the fire.
Back at the Alexander home, Eva Alexander is reading a book waiting for her husband and son to return. At 10:47, the two Novas come in the front door. Eva tells them she saw the news about the fire and wants to know if everything went okay. Jesse starts to tell her that his helmet shorted out but Sam tries to interrupt him from revealing the information. Jesse's wife heard enough and asks her husband what happened.
He admits that the Nova helmet stopped working again. Mrs. Alexander questions if the helmet is actually Jesse's original one he wore prior to becoming a Black Nova. The older Nova confirms it's the helmet he first wore otherwise it wouldn't work at all. Sam reassures his mother that everything is okay.
The next day at Carefree High School, Sam's friend Blake admits to Sam that he didn't do the reading last night after the movie. Unfortunately for Blake, the teacher is giving them a pop quiz about the reading. Sam replies to Blake that he did the reading and feels happy that he gets to learn in school. Since the return of Jesse in his life, Sam's attitude towards school has greatly improved.
Meanwhile at a nearby mining company, Jesse and his co-worker are having a discussion with their boss about an earthquake that hit the region the night before. The supervisor wants the two to go check out section N-76 which was shut down as a precaution.
In the mine, Jesse admits that he's grateful for his new job and it has meant a lot to his family. Suddenly, a large tremor hits the mine and shaft's ceiling collapses on them! The two are unharmed but are stunned to find that a huge tunnel is now where their small shaft had been!
Back at the high school, Blake is telling his friends that he definitely failed the pop quiz on A Tale of Two Cities. He says goodbye as he heads off to baseball practice. Another of Sam's friends goes to band practice leaving Sam and his other friend to start walking home. Sam also has to go another direction as he tells his friend that he has to help his mom at her job.
Later on the planet Verdantia, Sam Alexander quickly destroys an automaton which is destroying a city. He leaves as the residents cheer for him.
Back on Earth, Sam arrives to find his dad tinkering with the Nova helmet in his garage. Jesse wants his son to know that if things ever get to be too much and he needs help, he is there for him. Jesse's son thanks him for being back with his family and being a Nova with him. Sam's father tells him he loves him and they say good night.
After Sam leave to go do his homework, a voice speaks to Jesse inquiring who he had been talking to. Jesse Alexander confesses it was the son and he has no idea what is conspiring around him.
