960 million miles from Earth, Nova finds himself blazing out of control through space as he tries to reach Kvch. During the journey, the Phalanx virus continues to attack Rich Rider's body and mind. It begins tapping his memories and creating delusions in order to gain access to his will.

Nova's memory goes back to the day he received the Nova Force. At Harry S. Truman High School, Rich Rider is playing basketball against the school's girls team. The girls get the winning shot past Rich and the school bully, Mike Burley is mad about the loss. The two trade insults until Burley hits Rich in the stomach. As he lays on the basketball court in pain, his girlfriend Ginger Jaye offers to go with him to get ice cream.

While at Uncle Fudge's, Ginger reveals that Rich shouldn't be upset about being average and that his parents have expectations of him. She also tells him that her parents don't care enough about her to have expectations. Her mother is a drunk and her father abandoned the family some time ago. Suddenly, Mike Burley shows up and begins bothering Rich. Ginger defends her friend and begins arguing with Burley. As Rich begins to defend Ginger, he finds himself hit by an energy beam!

Later at the hospital, Rich's family and Ginger wait for news on Rich's condition. Rich's mom, Gloria, accuses Ginger of giving her son pills and causing his coma. The two begin arguing and Rich's brother, Robert, and his father, Charles, step in to calm Gloria Rider down. Inside Richard Rider's mind, he is visited by Rhomann Dey and told that he has been chosen to be the next Nova Centurion Prime!

The Phalanx virus manipulates Rich's mind so he sees what he believes is the future. Looking down at him is a young Kree Nova Denarian. Nova is confused about where he is and the young Kree informs him that he on the Nova Corps Cruiser The Pride of Xandar. He also explains that Nova's memory loss is common due to his transmode virus which flares up from time to time. The Earthman is shocked when he looks at his reflection to see he has aged considerably!

The Denarian gives him the news that he is now 68 years old. Rich calls out for the WorldMind only to find the artificial sentience is no longer contained in his body! The WorldMind tells Nova that he is projecting himself from Nu-Xandar which was formed after they reformed the Nova Corps 43 years ago!

Rich turns to find himself facing Gamora and Phyla-Vell and the two women are dressed as Nova Centurions! Phyla explains that Rich convinced her years ago to give up being Quasar in order to help reform the Nova Corps. Along with Nova's two female friends is Wendell Vaughn, the original Quasar. Wendell is now a being of pure energy. Quasar explains to Rich that Nova Prime is needed to learn the final battle in the war against the Phalanx. The Earth hero turns to look out the spacecraft's window to see their destination. Rich is overwhelmed to discover the Phalanx-infected planet is Earth! Nova cannot take the shock that his family is most likely infected and goes into a coma.

When he awakens, he is back in his parents' house resting in his bedroom. Rich Rider is once again reliving his teenage memories. Suddenly, his recently acquired Nova powers burst forth and Rich flies through his bedroom wall! As he flies over New York City, the voice of the WorldMind begins talking to the new Nova Centurion Prime. The artificial sentience begins adjusting his power usage to help the new Nova get a handle on his powers. Rich doesn't have time to completely enjoy his new power of flight as the WorldMind takes him towards his intended enemy.

The Phalanx's transmode virus suddenly diverts Rich Rider's mind back to his possible future. Rich is still unconscious and his friends begin debating their next action. A leader is needed to take the Nova Corps against the Phalanx on Earth. Quasar and Gamora feel Phyla should become the new Nova Prime in Rich's place. Phyla-Vell is hesitant and believes Rich should be allowed a chance to recover and lead them. Suddenly, an alarm alerts the team that the Phalanx has launched an counter-attack. The Nova Corps finds itself facing eight million Phalanx warriors and Selects including all of Earth's super-heroes and super-villains!

Once again, Rich's thoughts are shifted back to his first days as Nova. The enemy the WorldMind directs him to is not Zorr as it happened in the real world. The virus has manipulated the memories so Nova finds himself facing a Phalanx warrior. Rich begins to panic as he doesn't know how to use his powers in a fight. Suddenly, the memory of Rhomann Dey appears and destroys the enemy. He joins Richard Rider to battle the group of other Phalanx warriors who appear. Dey attempts to teach Rider how to properly fight and use his powers. The young Earth hero begins fighting alongside his mentor and even enjoys the battle!

As they continue to defeat the Phalanx warriors, Rich asks why he was selected to become the Nova Centurion Prime. Dey explains that he was chosen because he was an average person who is trustworthy and loyal. The Nova Corps always selects average beings as they have been found to be the best warriors.

Back in the future, Rich is awakened by the young Denarian. The aged Rider tells his young friend that he is ready to stand with the Corp and lead them into the fight. He asks the WorldMind to power him up with the Nova Force and armor. The WorldMind is hesitant but Rich is determined. With a powerful burst of energy, Richard Rider is once more Nova Centurion Prime!

Before he leaves to join the Corps, Nova asks the Denarian his name. The young Kree replies that his name is Zam, the son of Ko-Rel. Rich responds that he seems to recall that he owes Zam's mother more than he can ever repay. With grim determination, Nova and Zam leave the ship and lead the charge of the Nova Corp!

Suddenly, the transmode virus's hold on Richard Rider is broken. Nova finds himself awake in the real world and discovers he is in great danger as the ground is trying to surround him. The WorldMind is greatly relieved to see Rich awake. Nova bursts through the makeshift tomb with a burst of power. The artificial sentience explains that a coma was the only solution available to prevent the virus from destroying him. Having failed to overtake the young Earthman, the Phalanx virus decided to try and encase him with all materials available to it.

Now free, Nova finds himself face-to-face with a crudely created facsimile of himself. The virus has generated it as a last ditch effort to stop Nova. Rich realizes the creature cannot beat him and destroys the unliving Nova with a powerful energy blast! With his foe stopped, Nova falls to his knees. The transmode virus is still raging through his body but Rich is determined to make it to Kvch. The WorldMind informs his heroic host that they are on Kvch, the homeworld of the Technarchy.
