Title: "On The Last Day"

On the planet Orbucen, a shadowy creature feeds on the fear of the inhabitants running from the destruction of their world. The destruction is being caused by the planet-eating being known as Galactus! In order to heighten the Orbucenians' emotional state, the shadow being takes over the body of a small child and kills its mother. The people panic at the murder until a peace officer arrives and shoots the boy in self-defense. The shadow being moves on into the boy of the officer and continues its rampage.

Meanwhile in the office of the Central City Adjudik, Nova and the Adjudik discuss the events since Galactus's arrival. The Earth hero informs the administrator that he was notified too late to make a difference in the planet's destruction. However, he promises that he will do his best to save as many people as he can. The Adjudik reveals that ark ships are evacuating survivors from all of the cities to colonize another world in the Zymut Reef region. However, the Orbucen leader gives Nova a list of people he wants saved first. The list has the names of royalty, privileged families and aristocrats. Rich Rider is infuriated that the Adjudik would sacrifice those who can't help themselves for those who already have the resources to get to the evacuation sites! Nova storms out of the office and begins his mission to save those who need it most.

Two minutes later in the city of Sethur, Nova and the WorldMind discuss the sobering comparisons between the fates of Orbucen and Xandar. The WorldMind is surprised that Nova hasn't rashly attacked Galactus. Rich understands that the planet is beyond saving but the people aren't. He also realizes that the planet's destroyer is too powerful for him to stop.

The human rocket comes across the sixty-four dead bodies killed by the shadow being. As he searches for the victim's killer, Nova comes under attack from energy blasts! Rich fires back with an energy blast of his own and the possessed officer falls to the ground dead. The WorldMind assures his human host that the man was already dead and that whatever had possessed him was of a psionic nature. The artificial sentience immediately initiates anti-psi protocols. The protocols barely are in place when Nova is attacked by the shadow being. The protection is able to reject the being's attack.

Having failed with a mental attack, the murdering lifeform jumps into the body of a small girl and tries to physically injure Rich Rider. As they battle, the shadow being speaks through the girl and announces that its name is Harrow. The WorldMind creates a localized gravimetric node with twenty times the strength of gravity. Nova launches the node at Harrow and traps it inside the field!

Fifteen minutes later, Nova has brought Harrow to the Adjudik. The Earthman informs the Orbucenian that he will be taking the shadowy murderer to face a Stellar Crimes Tribunal for trial. Rich and the Orbucen leader begin arguing morality and justice with Nova making it clear he will fight for everyone even as their world ends.

The young hero spends the next three hours rescuing numerous Orbucenians and taking them to the space arks. After delivering the final group, Rich is shocked to discover that the arks cannot launch due to a malfunction in their drive ignition systems. While speaking via comlink to the Adjudik, Nova discovers that Galactus is the cause of the malfunctions due to an electromagnetic disruption generated by his machines.

The best estimates by the engineers is four hours to shield all the ships' drives. Rich Rider immediately flies off into space to try to convince Galactus to delay his work for the time needed by the engineers. Meanwhile down on the planet, the Adjudik is quietly taken over by Harrow.

Up in space, Nova approaches Galactus and asks him to stop his destruction of Orbucen for only a few hours. In response, Nova is attacked by the devourer's herald - the Silver Surfer!
